Free and open source software promotes the development of the Internet as a public resource. Read more about Mozilla's principles
Mozilla devotes a significant amount of time and resources into fostering a healthy ecosystem for communities that promote people's ability to freely access, modify and distribute software and other creative works. Our focus is not just on the Mozilla community but extends to communities around other open source projects and free culture organizations. A healthy online community doesn't simply happen (there is no magic pixie dust) but it can be encouraged and supported.
Grants
Open source and free culture communities around the world have been supported by Mozilla grants to SQLite, LittleCMS, Creative Commons and others.
Leadership
Mozilla has helped to drive the emergence of open source and free culture projects in a number of ways:
- Pioneered the use of open source by for-profit companies
- Created a sustainable hybrid organization to support the community that mixes a mission-driven non-profit with market-oriented for-profit entities
